Where Solitaire comes from
Patience games appeared in northern Europe at the end of the 18th century; the Klondike variant is named after the Canadian gold rush region and spread in the late 19th century. It became the most played computer game in the world in 1990, when Microsoft bundled it with Windows 3.0 – officially to teach people how to use a mouse. Roughly 80 per cent of deals are solvable.
How it works
Move all 52 cards onto the four foundations at the top right – one suit each, ace to king.
In the seven columns you build down in alternating colours (red 7 on black 8). Whole runs can be dragged together. Only a king may go on an empty column.
Drag cards with the mouse. Clicking a card that fits sends it straight to a foundation. The stock at the top left turns over and recycles when empty.
Three tips for better results
- 1Always uncover face-down cards before tidying a column.
- 2Do not send every card to the foundation immediately – you often still need it below.
- 3Empty columns are precious: keep them free until you can move a king with a long chain into one.

Is Solitaire free to play?
Yes. Solitaire runs straight in your browser, costs nothing and needs no installation. There is no paywall – the chips in the game are play money and cannot be bought. The site is funded by advertising, which appears only if you agree to it.
Do I need an account to play Solitaire?
No. The home page offers “play now without an account” – that starts you straight away and your progress stays in this browser. An account is only worth it if you want the same progress on several devices; name and PIN are enough, and we never ask for an email address. A guest profile can be turned into an account at any time without losing anything.

The site adapts to the screen size, and anything you can click can also be tapped. Games controlled with arrow keys do need a keyboard, though.

The page has to load once; after that the game itself runs entirely in your browser and needs no connection. If you use an account, your progress syncs again as soon as you are back online.
