Halfbrick Studios of Brisbane released Fruit Ninja in 2010 for touch devices; within a few years it had passed a billion downloads and came to stand for a whole wave of swipe games. The genre lives off one good idea: a motion that feels physically right, and bombs that punish exactly that motion.

How it works

Goal

Swipe the mouse through the flying fruit. Every cut scores, several in one swipe build a combo.

Bombs

Never hit the black spheres with the burning fuse – that costs a life instantly.

Lives

A fruit that drops off the bottom of the screen also costs a life. Run out and the game ends.

Combo

Cut several fruit in a row without breaking the chain and each hit is worth more.

Knives

The shop unlocks more knives. Each has its own blade shape, trail colour and reach – the katana reaches much further than the pocket knife.

Three tips for better results

  1. 1Wait until several fruit share a height, then draw one long swipe straight through them.
  2. 2Cut at the top of the arc: that is where fruit moves slowest and clusters tightest.
  3. 3Steer well around bombs rather than close past them – short, controlled swipes are safer.
