Where Snake comes from
The idea goes back to the arcade game Blockade by Gremlin (1976), in which two players trapped each other behind growing walls. The single-player version became world famous in 1997, when Nokia preinstalled it on the 6110 – for millions of people Snake was the first mobile game they ever played. It has since appeared in countless forms, from Nibbles on MS-DOS to modern multiplayer arenas.
How it works
Steer the snake with the arrow keys or W A S D – swipe on mobile. Every apple gives 10 points and makes you longer. Hitting a wall or yourself ends the run. Each apple speeds things up.
Three tips for better results
- 1Hug the edges early and keep the middle clear – that is where you will need turning room later.
- 2Never enter a pocket with only one way out; count the squares before you turn.
- 3At high speed, turn one row too early rather than one row too late.

Is Snake free to play?
Yes. Snake runs straight in your browser, costs nothing and needs no installation. There are no ads and no paywall – the chips in the game are play money and cannot be bought.
Do I need an account to play Snake?
You create a profile with a name and a PIN, but no account is created on anybody else's server. Scores, chips, achievements and unlocked motifs live only in your own browser.
