Where Cloud Hopper comes from
Jumping upwards became a worldwide hit in 2009 with Doodle Jump by Lima Sky – one of the first games to make genuinely good use of the iPhone's tilt sensors. Its roots lie in Icy Tower (2001) and ultimately in the platform games of the eighties. What defines the genre: there is no finish line, only a height you want to beat next time.
How it works
Goal
Jump as high as you can. The hopper jumps by itself – you only steer left and right.
Controls
Arrow keys or A and D; the hopper also follows your mouse. Space or a click shoots at the beasts.
Platforms
Normal – always holds. Blue – slides back and forth. Brown – crumbles when you land. White – vanishes after one jump. Some carry a spring or a propeller.
Mid-air pickups
Spring, rocket, jetpack, propeller hat, balloon, magnet and shield. The magnet pulls stars in, the shield absorbs exactly one bite, and the balloon pops instead of costing you the run.
Beasts
Stomp them from above or shoot them for points. A hit from the side ends the run – unless you carry a shield or balloon.
Worlds
Every few thousand metres the world changes: meadow, treetops, cloud sea, storm front, northern lights, deep space.
Three tips for better results
- 1Hold the direction gently rather than tapping back and forth – the arc needs lead time.
- 2Land on moving platforms at their turning point: that is where they briefly stand almost still.
- 3Always look one platform beyond the one you are landing on.
