Where Video Poker comes from
The first machine with on-screen poker came from Dale Electronics in 1970; the breakthrough was Si Redd's Draw Poker for IGT in 1979. Video poker was the first casino game in which correct decisions could push the house edge below one per cent – which is why whole books of optimal holding strategy exist. Jacks or better is still the most common pay table.
How it works
Build the best possible five card hand. There are no opponents – you play against the fixed paytable on the right.
1. Choose your bet and press DEAL. 2. Click the cards you want to KEEP. 3. DRAW – every other card is replaced once.
Payouts start at a pair of jacks. A royal flush pays 800×.
After a win you can GAMBLE: draw a card higher than the dealer and your win doubles – up to five times. A tie keeps it, a lower card loses it.
Three tips for better results
- 1Never keep a lone kicker with a pair – drawing three cards is almost always better.
- 2Four to a flush beats a low pair; four to a royal beats everything below it.
- 3Do not break a low pair for three to a straight – the maths rarely works out.
