Where Blackjack comes from
Blackjack goes back to the French game vingt-et-un, played at court in the 18th century; Cervantes mentions a related form around 1600. It got its name in American gambling halls that paid a bonus for the jack of spades with an ace. In 1962 the mathematician Edward Thorp showed in Beat the Dealer that card counting can turn the house edge around – a book that made casinos change their rules.
How it works
Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Face cards count 10, an ace 11 or 1.
HIT draws, STAND ends your turn. DOUBLE doubles the bet and gives exactly one card. Two equal ranks can be SPLIT.
The dealer draws to 16 and stands on 17. A blackjack (21 on two cards) pays 3:2.
Three tips for better results
- 1On 12 to 16 against a low dealer card (2 to 6), stand: the dealer often busts without your help.
- 2Always split aces and eights, never split tens or fives.
- 3Insurance loses money in the long run – skip it, however tempting it looks.
