Where Poker comes from

Texas hold'em took shape in Robstown, Texas, in the early 20th century and reached the big casinos through Las Vegas in the 1960s. The World Series of Poker, running since 1970, made it the leading poker variant, and the real boom came in 2003 when amateur Chris Moneymaker qualified online and won the main event. Five community cards, two of your own – the mix of maths and reading people is still unmatched.

How it works

Texas Hold'em

Everyone gets two hole cards, and five community cards appear in the middle. Your best five out of those seven counts.

Flow

Pre-flop → flop (3 cards) → turn (1) → river (1). There is a betting round before every new card.

Your options

Fold – give up. Check/Call – stay in. Raise – throw chips on one at a time, then confirm. All-in – everything.

Blinds

Small and big blind move one seat every hand, so play never stalls for free.

Side pots

If someone goes all-in for less, a separate pot is formed. Whoever did not pay in enough cannot win the larger pot.

Your chips

You buy in with account chips when you sit down; your remaining stack goes back to the account when you leave.

Three tips for better results

  1. 1Position is money: acting late gives you more information and cheaper calls.
  2. 2Play fewer hands before the flop than you want to – most losses start with weak holdings.
  3. 3A big bet on the river usually means exactly what it looks like.
