Where Snow Defence comes from
Tower defence in winter dress: the genre grew out of custom maps for real-time strategy games, and the winter theme arrived through the Christmas editions of countless browser games in the 2000s. The structure is the same as classic tower defence – fixed path, limited gold, waves that keep getting tougher – except that snowmen do the throwing instead of cannons.
How it works
Goal
Survive every wave. If a fire goblin gets through on the far left, that lane's snow plough clears it once – the next breach on the same lane ends the game.
Flakes
Flakes are your currency. They drift down slowly on their own, and much faster from snow clouds. A first cloud is almost always the best opening.
Placing
Click a unit on the right, then a free tile. Clicking the same unit again cancels. Right-click a placed unit to take it back for half the price.
The units
Snow cloud – makes flakes, does not fight. Snowman – throws snowballs down its lane. Ice block – takes a beating, does nothing else. Twin thrower – throws twice as fast. Frost mine – blasts the first enemy that touches it. Frost blower – its hits slow the enemy right down.
The enemies
Sparks are fast and weak, embers are the standard, lava lumps soak damage, runners sprint. Anything that meets a unit stops and eats through it.
Three tips for better results
- 1Place your first snowmen on a bend – that is where goblins stay in range longest.
- 2Upgrade one strong snowman rather than placing three weak ones.
- 3Keep some gold between waves: reinforcements are always needed mid-wave.

Is Snow Defence free to play?
Yes. Snow Defence runs straight in your browser, costs nothing and needs no installation. There is no paywall – the chips in the game are play money and cannot be bought. The site is funded by advertising, which appears only if you agree to it.
Do I need an account to play Snow Defence?
No. The home page offers “play now without an account” – that starts you straight away and your progress stays in this browser. An account is only worth it if you want the same progress on several devices; name and PIN are enough, and we never ask for an email address. A guest profile can be turned into an account at any time without losing anything.
