Play Monopoly online

Roll, move, buy – then wait for somebody to land on your street. Complete colour groups let you build houses and hotels, stations and utilities pay by count. Chance and community chest cards make sure no two games run alike.

Where Monopoly comes from

The original was created in 1904 by Elizabeth Magie as The Landlord's Game – explicitly as a lesson against land speculation. For decades it was passed around and modified in universities and Quaker communities until Charles Darrow sold a version to Parker Brothers in 1935. The irony stuck: a game against monopolism became the best-known game about piling up property.

How it works

Goal

Become the richest player! Buy properties, collect rent, build houses and hotels – and drive your opponents into bankruptcy.

Turn

"Roll": the dice tumble and your token hops space by space. An unowned property may be bought. Someone else's property costs you rent. A double lets you roll again. Three doubles → jail. Passing GO: +200.

Building

Own a whole colour group and you can build houses (evenly); the 5th is a hotel. Houses raise the rent sharply.

Jail

Pay bail of 50, use a "get out of jail" card, or roll a double (max. 3 rounds).

Modes

Rules Simple (no auction) or Classic (with auction). Length: round limit, until bankruptcy, or a target fortune.

Stake

A duel: a loss costs 1 life, a win pays chips.

Three tips for better results

  1. 1The orange and red streets get landed on most often – they sit one roll past jail.
  2. 2Three houses is where rent really jumps; below that, building barely pays.
  3. 3Always keep enough cash for someone else's hotel, or you will be selling at the worst moment.
