Where Pool comes from
Billiards began in the 15th century as a lawn game moved indoors onto a table on bad days – hence the green cloth. Rubber cushions arrived in 1835, and the leather tip on the cue is what made spin possible at all. Eight-ball itself is an American invention from the early 20th century and is now the most widely played pool game in the world, with fifteen object balls and the black eight last.
How it works
Goal
Pot all of your balls first (solids 1-7 OR stripes 9-15), then the black 8 last – do that and you win.
Groups
At the break the table is "open". The first ball you legally pot sets your group. After that you must always hit one of your own balls first.
Controls
- Aiming: move the mouse – the white line shows the direction (and, depending on the aid, the contact point and deflection).
- Power: slider on the right.
- Spin: drag the contact point on the cue ball (draw/follow/side).
- Shooting: click the table (in your aim direction) or the "Shoot" button.
Fouls → ball in hand
Potting the cue ball, hitting the wrong ball first, or no ball reaching a rail or pocket after contact is a foul. Your opponent may place the cue ball freely. Potting the 8 early or on a foul loses immediately.
Three tips for better results
- 1Aim at the contact point on the object ball, not at the pocket.
- 2Think one ball ahead: where will the cue ball stop? Position beats power.
- 3Spin changes not just the cue ball's path but also the angle off the cushion.
