Where Bowling comes from
Pin games are more than 5,000 years old – stone balls and nine pins were found in an Egyptian child's grave. The modern ten-pin form arose in the United States because several states banned ninepins as gambling in the 19th century; people simply added a pin. In 1895 the American Bowling Congress standardised the lane, the ball and the scoring with strikes and spares.
How it works
Goal
Ten frames, two balls each. All ten pins on the first ball is a strike, on the second a spare.
Throwing
1. Move the mouse left/right to set your stance. 2. Click to start the power bar – it runs up and down. 3. A second click locks the power and starts the spin bar. 4. A third click locks the spin and the ball rolls.
Arrow keys work too, space confirms.
Spin
Spin curves the ball as it travels. A ball that starts wide and hooks into the pocket between the 1 and 3 pin clears the most.
Scoring
Strike: 10 plus your next two balls. Spare: 10 plus your next ball. Otherwise: the number of pins. The tenth frame grants bonus balls after a strike or spare.
Gutter
Roll off the side into the gutter and the ball is wasted.
Three tips for better results
- 1Never aim dead centre at the head pin: the pocket beside it clears far more reliably.
- 2Spin only pays off at the right speed – too slow and the ball turns away early.
- 3For a spare, accuracy beats power: a single standing pin needs no force.
