Where Memory comes from
Ravensburger published Memory in 1959, based on a design by William Hurter, a Swiss who had invented the game for his own family. The principle is far older and appears in Japanese shell-matching games of the 12th century. In English it is called Concentration or Pairs – and it is one of the few games in which children regularly beat adults.

Turn over two cards. If the motifs match they stay up – otherwise they flip back. Find all pairs in as few moves as possible.

- 1Remember positions as patterns, not as single squares – rows and columns stick better.
- 2When unsure, turn the unknown card first: that buys information instead of guessing.
- 3Work systematically out from one corner rather than jumping across the board.
