Where Ludo comes from
Josef Friedrich Schmidt designed the game in Munich in 1907/08, modelled on the English game Ludo, which itself descends from the Indian game pachisi. The breakthrough came in the First World War: Schmidt sent thousands of sets free to military hospitals, and the recovering soldiers took the game home. More than a hundred million copies have been sold since.

Goal
Get all four pieces home. A piece may only leave the yard on a 6. Landing on an opponent's piece sends it back to its yard.
How to play
Click the die – it is thrown onto the board. Then click one of your movable pieces (it glows). A 6 grants an extra roll. You must reach the goal with an exact count.
Stake
A duel against the computer: a win pays chips into your account.
Three tips for better results
- 1Bring a second piece out rather than pushing a single one far ahead – alone it will be captured.
- 2The squares just before an opponent's home are the most dangerous: everyone passes through them.
- 3A six gives you another roll – think about whether coming out or moving is worth more.

Is Ludo free to play?
Yes. Ludo runs straight in your browser, costs nothing and needs no installation. There is no paywall – the chips in the game are play money and cannot be bought. The site is funded by advertising, which appears only if you agree to it.
Do I need an account to play Ludo?
No. The home page offers “play now without an account” – that starts you straight away and your progress stays in this browser. An account is only worth it if you want the same progress on several devices; name and PIN are enough, and we never ask for an email address. A guest profile can be turned into an account at any time without losing anything.
